Abstract
Sleep Apnea Syndrome is considered a cronic, progressive and disabling disease, relacionated with a high cardiovascular mortality and metabolics comorbities. Objective: The aim of this study was evaluate the impact of Berlin Questionnaire for the screening of Sleep Apnea Syndrome as a periodical medical examination in a company in Brazil. Design:It was realized a screening for the diagnosis of Sleep Apnea Syndrome during the annual clinical examination for labor purposes in a brazilian company of 3.128 employees, from january 2013 to december 2014, applaying the Berlin Questionnarie to all employees submitted to the annual clinical examination. When the result was positive, a Polysomnography was ordered for the confirmation of the syndrome.Results:84% of the target population was submitted to the Berlin Questionnarie, with a total of 2.707 fullfilled and analyzed questionnaries, 38% been women and 62% men. The medium age was 38 years old. It was indicated 466 Polysomnographys(17% of total)based on the pontuation obtained in the questionnary, 11% been women and 21% men, with the medium age of 43 years old. The elevated Body Mass Index was the main parameter changed in this population. We received the result of 197 polysomnographys until this moment, representing 42% of the employees with Berlin Questionnarie suggesting high risk of Sleep Apnea Syndrome. 154 of Polysomnographys done confirmed the diagnosis of Sleep Apnea Syndrome (78%). Conclusion: Berlin Questionnarie is a good screnning tool for the diagnosis of Sleep Apnea Syndrome and can be applied in companies as medical annual examination for searching for this important syndrome.
