Abstract
Objective: to evaluate infants who were admitted to Alexandria University hospitals with subglottic hemangiomas for clinical evaluation, and management
Subjects: a retrospective review of files will be done for 97 infants who were diagnosed as subglottic hemangioma seen at pediatric department and otorhinolaryngology department of Alexandria University Hospitals, from January 2002 to December 2012.
Methods: Medical records of each patient will be reviewed for details of presentation, management, and outcome.
Results: females represent 78.4% of the cases.The mean age of onset was 2.8±1.1months while the average age of diagnosis was 5.6± 1.7 months. It was noted that 87.6% of the cases had biphasic stridor,68% of the cases had grade 3 airway obstruction and 35.1% of the cases associated with cutaneous haemangiomas. Our patients were divided in to 3 groups: group(1) received oral steroids, group(2) received oral propranolol and group(3) received both oral steroids and oral propranolol which represent (30.9%,52.6%,16.5%) of cases respectively. In steroids group: 40 % of the cases showed rapid response while 36.7 % of cases showed slow response and 23.3% of cases showed no response to treatment. In propranolol group: 88.2% of the cases showed very rapid response to treatment while 9.8 % of cases showed rapid response and 2% of cases not responded to treatment. Lastly in propranolol and steroids group: 31.3% of the cases showed rapid response to treatment while 56.3 % of cases showed slow response and 12.4% of cases showed no response.
Conclusion: Propranolol is excellent and safe drug for treatment of SGH with no reported side effects.
