Abstract
Background: In Japan, Mycobacterium xenopi infection is rare. Furthermore, its epidemiological data is still unknown in our country. The aim of this report is to analyze the frequency within Nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infection and to compare their clinical features with those of European countries.
Patients and Method: We extracted culture positive Mycobacterium xenopi cases and other NTM cases from microbiological laboratory database belonging to our tertiary centre, between 2000 and 2014 and reviewed its clinical data from their medical record.
Results: NTM grew in 12342 respiratory specimens taken from 3039 patients. In 1870 (60.7%) cases, we had twice or more same culture results from distinct specimens. Mycobacterium xenopi grew in 78 (0.6%) specimens taken from 12 patients. Eight (66.7%) were diagnosed as Mycobacterium xenopi infection, which was only 0.5% of cases diagnosed as NTM infection. Three cases were excluded due to lack of clinical information. The 5 cases consisted of 4 men and 1 woman. Three cases aged 20 to 30 years old and had no past medical history. The other 2 cases aged between 60 to 70 years old and both had history of tuberculosis and cavity in right upper lobe. All cases had lesion in upper lobe and received first-line treatment containing rifamycin, ethambutol, clarithromycin or fluoroquinolones.
Conclusion: This study shows the specifically low incidence of pulmonary Mycobacterium xenopi infection. Patients' clinical features had no significant difference with that of previously reported cases in European countries.
