Abstract
Background: COPD is now a condition which involve more than the lungs & has varied extra pulmonary effects seems to be related with systemic inflammation.Metabolic syndrome is more likely to be present in COPD patients & increase levels of systemic pro inflammatory proteins from both the lungs and adipose tissue coincide in these patients & this association might result in increase morbidity and mortality in such patients.
Aim & Objective: To study the frequency of Metabolic syndrome in patients with COPD & their association with systemic inflammation.
Method: A total of 288 patients were diagnosed COPD on the basis of COPD combined assessment test as per GOLD guidelines. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed on the basis of international diabetes federation (IDF) ethnicity specific criteria. C reactive proteins(CRP) levels were done to assess systemic inflammation.
Result: Out of 288 patients with COPD, 160 (55.56%) had raised CRP levels. Metabolic syndrome was found in 104(36.11%) & out of these CRP levels were raised in 84(80.76%).
Conclusion: In our study 36.11% with COPD has coexisting Metabolic syndrome & raised CRP levels in such patients proves the role of systemic inflammation. The coexistence of Metabolic syndrome & raised CRP levels in COPD patients might related with increased morbidity and mortality which are often overlooked.
