Summary:
Schematic representation of a variable-pressure constant-volume plethysmograph, illustrating the controlled mechanical leak to room air and reference chamber. The subject breathes through a pneumotachygraph, entirely within the chamber. Recording of the volume displacements of the thorax is limited to those related to compression and decompression of thoracic gas. Calibration of plethysmographic pressure is done via a motorised syringe inserting and withdrawing 30–50 mL of air into the plethysmograph chamber at a frequency of approximately 1 Hz.
