Summary:
The resting maximal flow–volume curve from a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patient is represented by the solid line. The solid smallest loop corresponds to tidal volume at rest and the dashed curve indicates tidal volume at maximal exercise. During exercise, end-inspiratory and end-expiratory lung volumes are increased (dynamic hyperinflation) and expiratory flow limitation is seen over most of expiration.
