Summary: 
Mean ventilatory responses to a) hypoxia and b) hypercapnia are shown for the 13 patients with thyrotoxicosis and compared with those in 44 normal subjects. The hypoxic ventilatory response was steeper in the patient with thyrotoxicosis, and minute ventilation (V′E) at arterial oxygen tension (Pa,O2) of 40 mmHg was two-fold greater. The hypercapnic response was also significantly increased in the thyrotoxicosis patients compared with the normal subjects. a) A=227±38; n=13 (thyrotoxicosis).
