Summary: 
Simplified diagram outlining the mineralogy of silica and silicates [9]. The element silicon (Si) combines with O2 forming SiO2 or free silica, or is linked as a tetraoxide (SiO4). These can be linked in various ways that control their shape and characteristics. Amorphous (shapeless) silica does not have a regular crystalline structure. Note that most minerals are not pure, and contamination with several other varieties is usual. Conversion between different forms may occur. Amorphous forms often contain crystalline forms and vice versa (e.g. talc contaminated with tremolite asbestos, gold deposits containing crystalline silica).
