Summary: 
Environmental interactions with genetics and epigenetics modulates severe asthma pathophysiology. Pre- or post-natal exposure to environmental pollutants and/or the microbiome can affect epigenetic processes that interact with asthma genetic hits to affect various aspects of severe asthma pathophysiology, including airway remodelling, mucus hypersecretion and neural pathways. The environment also affects the severe asthma airway by enhancing the susceptibility and severity of exacerbations. These processes also impact on co-morbidities associated with severe asthma.
