Summary:
Increased bacterial burden in IPF is associated with mortality. Subjects with IPF were stratified into tertiles based on the bacterial load (copy number of 16S rRNA gene·mL−1 of BAL fluid). Subjects in the top tertile with the highest load were at increased risk of mortality compared with IPF subjects in the tertile with the lowest bacterial burden. *: p<0.05; hazard ratio 4.59 (95% confidence interval 1.05–20).
