Summary:
Cardiac lipodystrophy in animals and humans. Oil Red O staining for lipids in human and rat heart showing similarity of excess lipid deposition in obesity. Frozen sections. Cardiac muscle samples from a) an untreated obese Zucker diabetic fatty (ZDF) (fa/fa) rat or b) from a troglitazone-treated obese ZDF rat. Autopsy material of human cardiac muscle from c) a 57-year-old obese male (body mass index (BMI) 42 kg·m−2) or d) a 67-year-old lean male (BMI 28 kg·m−2). There is accumulation of Oil Red O-stained lipids in samples from both the obese human, presumably diet-induced, and the untreated ZDF rat with monogenic obesity. Scale bars = 10 μm.
