Relative importance of nosebleeds (NB) and telangiectasia (tel) in making a clinical diagnosis of hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT). a) In the series of female pulmonary arteriovenous malformation (PAVM) patients reported by Shovlin et al. [11], the presence of tel at HHT diagnostic sites (lips, internal oral mucosa and tongue, and fingertip pads) was recorded at the time of assessment and subsequently classified into four categories. a) Illustration of typical (three or more, readily detectable by careful inspection of the sites), compared to florid (as illustrated by Shovlin et al. [12] and Faughnan et al. [13]); sparse, or absent. b) Proportions of females demonstrating the clinical features at the ages of <30 yrs and <45 yrs. Note that “classical tel” referred to three or more in classical sites, or more florid. Contrast the high proportions of females that did not demonstrate such tel with the high proportions who declared a family history (FH) of NB (and/or HHT) when prompted.
